Lan Ha Bay Overview
Nestled south of the world-famous Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay is like a hidden gem–less well-known, yet it has its own charm. The bay covers a modest 7,000 square meters, and it is home to over 400 limestone islands and islets, creating an awe-inspiring seascape that could rival the magnificence of Halong Bay.
The secret behind Lan Ha’s relative obscurity? Clearly, it's far from Halong City and the tourist center. While Halong Bay was busy becoming a star since its recognition in 1994 by UNCESCO as a World Heritage Site, then one of the world’s New 7 Wonders of Nature in 2012, Lan Ha played a supporting role under the shadow of its more renowned neighbor.
But as the cruising service has become more popular, Lan Ha Bay has come to the attention of travelers as the perfect alternative to the crowded Halong Bay. It’s like an otherworldly haven just waiting to be found, with unspoiled lagoons, emerald waters, and caverns that lure adventure seekers. Whether you have a thing for kayaking adventures, relaxing swims, or rock climbing, there's something for everyone in Lan Ha Bay.
Most people visit Cat Ba Island during the summer, believing it’s all about swimming and sunbathing on sandy beaches. But let us tell you, you're missing out on the ultimate kayaking adventure in the mesmerizing Lan Ha Bay.
Imagine kayaking between islands and winding through hidden caverns. You can explore solo or be teamed with another fellow, each equipped with a paddle. The kayak takes you where those cruise ships can't go—up close and personal with rugged limestone mountains, beautiful seascapes, and the type of Instagrammable sights that'll make your followers want to be there.
For beginners, navigating a kayak may be challenging. Once you get used to the action, the paddle will propel you through the waves with sheer excitement. Kayaking through tunnel water caverns in Lan Ha Bay is the true highlight. As you kayak into the tunnel, stalactites dangle like nature's chandeliers, leaving you in awe of Cat Ba's hidden treasures.
From April to June, the weather in Lan Ha Bay is ideal for water activities. It is neither too hot nor too cold, but warmth invites you to the beaches. The sea is fantastic, with tranquil waters for a memorable kayaking excursion. It's the perfect time to soak up the sun, take a swim, and enjoy the beauty of Lan Ha Bay without having to worry about rough waves.
Meanwhile, the weather in July and August is quite unpredictable. Storms and tropical depressions may disrupt the trips, but sunny days are still great for sightseeing and leisure. Just keep an eye on the weather forecast in the area.
From September to April, Lan Ha Bay becomes more lively as tourists flock to enjoy good weather conditions and holiday vacations. Winter may be approaching between November and February, but Lan Ha Bay does not hibernate. In fact, it's the perfect time for a relaxing getaway, fun-filled with sports like kayaking, paddleboarding, or rock climbing.
The Dark and Bright Cave in Lan Ha Bay is a must-see for kayakers. Found at the convergence of Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay, it is a highlight on the excursions of many overnight cruise ships. As you paddle through the cave formed by the tide and water flow activities eroding the foot of the limestone karsts, you will enter a sheltered pool of clear waters surrounded by walls of limestone rocks. The excursion is a great time to reconnect with nature.
Ba Trai Dao Beach is nestled inside the mesmerizing stretch of Lan Ha Bay, near the picturesque Cat Ba Island. A trio of islets standing closely, like three peaches when viewed from a distance, gained the nickname "Ba Trai Dao," or Three Peaches. When the weather is favorable, the islets change into a kayaker's paradise, encouraging enthusiasts to paddle through their beautiful waters.
Tra Bau is not only a great swimming spot but also a fantastic place to take a kayaking adventure. During the day, the entire region resembles an emerald lagoon, hidden within a "jungle" of jagged karst islands and islets. At night, the cruise ships' lights illuminate Tra Bau, transforming it into a shimmering gem in the midst of the sea.
Located on the east side of Cat Ba, Ao Ech is a tranquil place for immersive moments of untouched nature. Kayaking at Ao Ech offers a one-of-a-kind experience that cannot be found elsewhere. As you sail slowly through gorgeous islands and caves, you'll see enclosed limestone karsts rising above the sea surface and find out about secret lagoons hidden within towering limestone cliffs.
Due to its hidden location and the difficulties of reaching it, Ba Ham remains beautiful and undisturbed to this day. The only way to view this breathtaking spot is by kayaking or rowing a boat. Also, only when the tide is low can you kayak through an entrance to get to the lake. Surrounded by cliffs, Ba Ham is quite calm, with just the sounds of waves and birds.
To keep the fun going, let's check out a few basic safety precautions before you start kayaking in Lan Ha Bay.
+ Pay attention to your guide first. They are experienced kayak instructors who will make sure you're prepared.
+ Wear casual clothing: sandals, shorts, life vests, and T-shirts. Nothing fancy is needed; we're not here to walk a runway, we're here to paddle.
+ Protect your belongings. Stow your jewelry, wallet, and phone in waterproof bags.
+ Check the weather and tidal conditions in advance. If the weather is not looking favorable, stay away from kayaking.
+ Avoid going near rocks, caverns, and cliffs. They could scratch your kayak.
+ Do not go kayaking by yourself. It's safer to travel with friends or in groups. Also, maintain a safe space between kayaks, just as you would on land.
+ Don't drink, and go kayaking. A clear head keeps you safe on the water. Wait till you've safely completed your kayaking before having a party and drinking.
